PLEIN AIR STATEMENT

I refresh my vision with Plein Air (french for “open air”- outside) painting. The subtleties of colour that only the eye can see. There is the excitement of wind, fast-moving clouds, changing light and seasons, rain approaching. I must cover or grab the painting before it blows away. In making marks one cannot dawdle. Yet I am aware of the Moose that maybe getting close, a hare panting a few feet away. A friendly fisherman apologises for stacking his traps in his spot blocking my view, before the crowds arrive.

I carry a pocket pouch of waterbrushes, paper and palette, or can condense my pastels into a padded river bag for a wilderness adventure. And I keep a box of acrylics in my car to catch that moment. Smaller paintings can be just right as they are—or Not. They may stimulate studio work. Larger paintings may require returning another day, same time and light or be finished in the studio
